Sturgis Charter Public School
Sturgis Charter Public School/DCAMM, Hyannis, MA
Jones served as Collaborating Architect with The Design Initiative, Inc. (TDI, Architect-of-Record) to renovate 441 Main Street, a 12,000+ square-foot steel frame and concrete block infill former bowling alley to be repurposed as an expansion of the Sturgis Public Charter School. The renovated facility provides 8 classrooms (3 unique to theater and music and 5 lecture type learning) and administrative and student space. The design fosters exploration and play with stepped seating benches in common areas, ramps connecting existing elevation changes, and color.
TDI’s relationship with the Sturgis Charter Public School began with a campus upgrade project that involved existing spaces with code upgrades and accessible paths in the West Campus and the renovation of 529 Main Street which they bought and changed from a retail building into a testing and performance center. After successfully completing this work, TDI was then chosen by the Sturgis Charter Public School and the Designer Selection Board to develop the feasibility study into working drawings for 441 Main Street. Teaming with Jones provided depth and breadth to the project team while giving us an opportunity to learn more about design and planning for Charter School programming.
