Schneider Hall
Norwich University, Northfield, VT
With an interior dating to the 1950s, Schneider Hall (formerly North Hall) sorely needed an overhaul that would bring the building up to date and accommodate new modes of teaching. Because the building was structurally sound, our approach was to keep as much of the existing structure as possible intact, repurposing the space for classrooms and seminar rooms that fit well with the existing geometry. New interior finishes, refined circulation, and the addition of technology allow the space to function effectively but efficiently. One area of dramatic improvement to this mid-century building is in the performance of the envelope. Blower door testing at the conclusion of construction shows a CFM50/sf level of 0.16 where high-performance construction is considered to be <0.30 and ultra-tight construction is considered to be <0.15.
